FIRST EDITION, 2 volumes, folio (541 x 345mm.), additional chromolithographed title, 152 lithographed plates (on 149 sheets), 8 of them coloured, double-page map at end of volume 2, nineteenth-century red half morocco over marbled boards, spines gilt, 

front free endpaper of volume one repaired with adhesive tape, damp-staining (mainly marginal), some spotting, a few plates rather toned, rebacked retaining original spines, slight wear to spines


RARE. This work covers Armenia, Persia and Mesopotamia, illustrated with fine plates of architectural ornaments, facades, floorplans and views. Charles Texier was a French archaeologist and historian, who discovered the ruins of the ancient Hittite capital of Hatusa in 1834. He published a number of works about his trips to Asia Minor and the Middle East describing the geography, geology, art and architecture of ancient sites, along with maps and historical descriptions.
