Francis Hervé
A residence in Greece and Turkey; with notes of the journey through Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary and the Balkan. London: Whittaker and Co., 1837
2 volumes, 8vo (212 x 133mm.), 2 lithographed titles, 12 tinted lithographed plates, nineteenth century maroon morocco gilt, gilt edges, yellow endpapers, some light spotting, extremities slightly rubbed
A very good copy. Hervé travelled to Greece and Constantinople in 1833. His account is littered with entertaining observations on the character and customs of the Greeks. A Royal Academician, Hervé was commissioned by Admiral Church to produce a series of portraits of the leaders of the Greek war of independence and some of those portraits are reproduced in this work. His account also gives an early view of the newly established Greek monarchy at Nauplion.
