A LETTER BY MARLBOROUGH ON THE DIPLOMATIC NEGOTIATIONS THAT PAVED THE WAR FOR THE WAR OF THE SPANISH SUCCESSION. Marlborough had sailed for Holland with William III on 1 July 1701 in order to negotiate with the Dutch and the Holy Roman Empire to re-establish the Grand Alliance - as well as to try and reach an agreement with the French and avoid war. In this letter Marlborough expresses confidence that the alliance would be renewed. He was proved correct: negotiations with France failed, a treaty of alliance was signed on 7 September, and Europe embarked on an exhausting 13-year war. The years that followed were of course to see Marlborough oversee a series of spectacular victories against the French, which established him as one of the greatest generals in British history.
