Jan van Kessel

In the vibrant and dynamic atmosphere of seventeenth century Antwerp, in 1660 Van Kessel produced his first series of paintings evoking the four continents, unfortunately now still incomplete. These two works (lots 13 and 14), both dated to the following year, reprise motifs the artist had already used in his Four Continents series, sometimes identically: for example, the brown seal in the extreme right of the composition, with its mouth open and one flipper folded underneath its body, can be found in his various illustrations of Algiers dated 1660 (Madrid, Museo del Prado, inv. 1554), in his series Africa dated 1664-66 (Munich, Alte Pinakothek, inv. 1912) and in 1675 (Dorotheum sale, Vienna, 14 April 2005, lot 182). The seal is reminiscent of the one depicted by Snyders, in the centre of the composition Fishmongers at their stall (Musée du Louvre, Paris, inv. 1848).

However, Van Kessel did not confine himself to a faithful rendering of the living world: his imaginary compositions bear witness to his great inventiveness. Here, as well as bringing together exotic and indigenous animals from land and sea, Van Kessel has also created some monstrous creatures, such as the two-headed snake in the foreground.

Dans cette riche et foisonnante atmosphère anversoise du XVII^e siècle, Van Kessel réalise en 1660 sa première série de représentations des quatre continents, aujourd’hui encore malheureusement incomplète. Nos deux œuvres (lots 13 et 14), toutes deux datées de l’année suivante, citent parfois exactement des motifs déjà utilisés par l’artiste dans sa série des continents : l’on retrouve ainsi le phoque brun à l’extrême droite de notre composition, la gueule ouverte et une patte repliée sous lui, dans ses différentes représentations d’Alger en 1660 (Madrid, musée du Prado, inv. 1554), en 1664-66 parmi sa série Afrique (Munich, Alte Pinakothek, inv. 1912) puis en 1675 (vente Dorotheum, Vienne, 14 avril 2005, lot 182). Ce phoque n’est pas sans rappeler celui représenté par Snyders, au centre de sa composition Marchands de poissons à leur étal (musée du Louvre, Paris, inv. 1848).

Van Kessel ne se limite toutefois pas à une représentation fidèle du monde vivant. Ses compositions imaginaires témoignent de sa grande inventivité, comme ici où, réunissant des animaux terrestres et marins, exotiques et autochtones, Van Kessel créé également des créatures parfois monstrueuses comme ce serpent à deux têtes au premier plan.
