Description

Lunar Landing Research Vehicle Chromogenic Print

Large, vintage chromogenic print, 16 x 20 inches, "This Paper Manufactured by Kodak" watermark on verso, 20 x 24 inches with light blue matting, label reading, "Training for a Lunar Landing."

Nicknamed the "Flying Bedstead," the Lunar Landing Research Vehicle (LLRV) was created to simulate landing on the Moon in the Lunar Module. As such, its 4,200-lb thrust turbojet engine and 18 different rockets were designed to cancel out 5/6ths of the LLRV's weight, thus simulating the gravity on the Moon. Despite a number of accidents in training — including Neil Armstrong's famous ejection from the vehicle on May 6, 1968 — the "Flying Bedstead" remained an essential tool in NASA's program to land humans on the Moon safely.
