Original watercolour illustration produced for the 1924 series of American Weekly covers, 'Bible Scenes and Heroes', published 19th October 1924.
In November 1923, Ray Long, of Hearst in New York commissioned Dulac to produce an annual series of watercolours for the covers of American Weekly, a Sunday supplement of The New York Weekly American. Dulac was to produce 8-12 illustrations on a theme of his choice, though subject to editorial approval. His first series, on the family friendly theme, 'Bible Scenes and Heroes' was to be ready for Autumn 1924. The series proved popular, and the Illustrated London News reproduced all twelve pictures. Dulac continued to produce watercolours for Amercian Weekly until 1950, with Dulac's selected themes generally falling into two categories: a series of book illustrations, without text and historical and legendary events and portraits (see lots ??).
