Description

DUBOIS, JACQUES. Methodus medicamenta componendi, ex simplicibus, iudicio summo delectis, & arte certa paratis, quatuor libris distributa. Auctore D. Iacobo Sylvio medico. Indice adiecto copiossimo. Lyon: (Philibert Rollet & Barthélemy Frein for) Guillaume Rouillé, 1549

A small format medical text from the library of Marcus Fugger, with his signature. Marcus was buying numerous books from Paris in around 1550, in both simple and elaborate bindings (see Bibliotheca Brookeriana I, 11 October 2023, lots 26, 33 and 86 for different styles of bindings made for him, and several lots in the present sale).

Other small format Lyon imprints were bound similarly for Marcus Fugger, with simple interlacing and flat spines with gilt decoration, including Davis Gift 57 and two volumes of a 1550 Plato (Martin Breslauer Inc., catalogue 110, items 44 and 45), and a 1550 Galen (lot 1099); the latter two volumes also contains blank leaves bound at the end. The bindings have been attributed to Wotton Binder C from the tools used on the spines.

Dubois (1478-1555), anatomist and grammarian, taught anatomy at the university of Paris, though his teaching did not meet with approval from some of his students, most famously Vesalius. This pharmacological text is a handbook of practical medicine along Galenic lines; it is a reprint of the 1548 edition, also by Rollet and Frein.

16mo (122 x 75 mm). Roman type, 29 lines plus headline. collation: a-z8 A-Y8: 360 leaves. Woodcut printer’s device on title-page, woodcut initials and headpieces.

binding: Contemporary Parisian interlaced tan morocco gilt (128 x 85 mm), covers with a lighter brown inlay in an interlaced pattern outlined in gilt within a gilt fillet border, flat spine gilt, gilt edges, with a few quires of blank leaves bound at end. In a modern drop-backed folding box with perspex lid. (Joints slightly rubbed, light rubbing on covers, small repairs to corners.)

provenance: Marcus Fugger (1529-1597), inscription "Marx Fugg." on inside front cover, with his shelfmark "Arc.135 Nro.545" — Oettingen-Wallerstein library at Schloss Maihingen (which inherited some of Marcus Fugger’s library), armorial ink stamp on title-page (partly obscured) — shelfmark "y 1107" on inside front cover — Karl & Faber, Auktion 8: Bibliophile Kostbarkeiten aus der Bibliothek des Augsburger Patriziers Marcus Fugger, Munich, 6-7 November 1933, lot 450 — Jean Blondelet (d. 2001). acquisition: Purchased in 2010 from Librairie Paul Jammes, Paris. references: USTC 150324; von Gültlingen XI: Rollet & Frein 29
