William Thomas Greene

Parrots in Captivity. London: George Bell and Sons, 1884-1887

FIRST EDITION, 3 volumes, large 8vo (250 x 170mm.), 81 chromoxylographic plates, publisher’s dark blue-green cloth, tooled in blind, gilt parrot emblem on upper boards, professionally rebacked retaining original spine, volume 2 plate at page 85 slightly warped, extremities slightly rubbed

"An account of the habits of 81 varieties of parrots (including cockatoos, macaws, parakeets, etc.) with special reference to their behaviour in cage or aviary" (Zimmer p. 274). The fine plates are by Benjamin Fawcett (1808-1893) from drawings by his former apprentice, Alexander Francis Lydon (1836-1917). Fawcett and Lydon are best known for their works in (colour) wood engraving, the present work being an example of their chromoxylographical skills.
