A yellow gold elongated rectangular rear-wound wristwatch, Circa 1970-71

Dial: cream dial signed Cartier London, stretched black radial Roman numerals, blued steel épée hands

Calibre: 7’’’ circular rear-wound movement signed LeCoultre Co., grained decoration, lever escapement, jewelled to the centre, annular balance, flat hairspring, Kif Flector shock absorber

Case: 18k yellow gold rectangular case, polished rounded brancards, lugs with spring bars, case back secured by 4 screws to sides

Case number: outside case back with rear-set notched winder and numbered 9'601, inside case back with London hallmarks for 18k gold, date letter ‘p’ for 1970-71, [JC] Jean-Jacques Cartier punch mark and numbered 9'601, 9'487

Closure: black unsigned lizard strap and 18k gold deployant buckle with London import hallmarks for 1975, script signed Cartier, 18k, stamped 750 and BC, MC

The J.J.C. (Jean-Jacques Cartier) Tank model was introduced by Cartier London in 1951.1 This ‘Allongée’ version is an elongated interpretation of the model and can be compared to the Mini Tank J.J.C. Although nearly identical in width to the Mini Tank J.J.C., the present watch is approximately 4mm longer and features a rear wound movement, allowing the winding crown to be concealed on the case back. The dial configuration also differs, with stretched Roman numerals at 12 and 6 o’clock, complemented by slim baton hour markers in between. By hiding the crown and stretching the Roman numerals, the watch’s elongated proportions are further emphasized.

Based on the original L.C. (Louis Cartier) model, the J.J.C. Tank is distinguished by its rounded brancards and slim crossbars. The cream dial of the present watch, featuring bold stretched Roman numerals, a script signature, and the absence of a minute track, is typical of the design aesthetic often favoured by Cartier London in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
