The sitter was the fourth son of John, 1st Viscount Barrington of Beckett Hall, then in the county of Berkshire but now within the boundaries of modern-day Oxfordshire.

He joined the navy aged eleven and was to serve in the Seven Years' War. Between 1772 and 1775 he accompanied Captain John Jarvais, later 1st Earl St Vincent, on a voyage designed to inspect and record the defensive capabilities of significant ports in Russia, Sweden, Denmark and northern Germany. Barrington's last active service was the relief of Gibraltar in October 1782.

After his death in 1800, his family commissioned the sculptor John Flaxman, RA (1755-1826) to create a monument in his memory. This remains at St Andrew's church, Shrivenham.
