The sitter served under General Wolfe in Canada and took part in the capture of Quebec in 1759. Later he was made Governor of Jamaica (1777 until 1782) and was created a baronet in 1783. Between 1784 and 1786 he was commander-in-chief of the forces in Madras. It was there that he would have sat to Smart.
