Description

Giorgio Vasari

Ragionamenti... sopra le inventioni da lui dipinte in Firenze nel palazzo di loro altezze serenissime con... signor don Francesco Medici allora principe di Firenze. Insieme con la inventione della pittura da lui cominciata nella cupola. Florence: Filippo Giunta, 1588

4to (210 x 145mm.), woodcut printer's device on title-page and above colophon, woodcut portrait of Vasari on +4v, woocut initials, eighteenth-century vellum, spine with manuscript lettering, blue edges, occasional light foxing or browning (e.g. quire M), a few annotations erased in quire D

FIRST EDITION of Vasari's account of his own paintings for the Palazzo Vecchio, published posthumously by his nephew. Written in the form of a dialogue between Vasari and the dedicatee, Francesco de' Medici, this is one of only a very few sixteenth-century texts in which the artist himself discusses his choice of subjects and their representation.
