Album of title-pages
Title pages of ancient books, mostly foreign, dated from 1631. [England, 1830s]
4to (227 x 180mm.), calligraphic manuscript title-page, 91 printed leaves pasted into the album on leaves of different coloured paper (some watermarked Whatman 1820), contemporary half green calf gilt, spine gilt in compartments, later marbled slipcase
A collection of title-pages, frontispieces, printer's devices and other book illustrations, including a portrait of James I from 1602 (fol. 3), a portrait of Francis Bacon from 1651 (fol. 6), the engraved title to Malpighi's works of 1687 (fol. 13), the title-page to a 1522 edition of Calepinus (fol. 22), De Hooghe's title to Grotius (fol. 29), an engraving of "The Churchgoers" after Israel van Mechenen (fol. 68), as well as titles by Eisen, Gravelot, Goeree, Picard, and other famous engravers. The bulk of the volume comprises title-pages from England, France, Holland and Germany from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
