Description

GALILEI, GALILEO

Dialogo... dove ne i congresso di quattro giornate si discorre sopra i due massimi sistemi del monto tolemaico, e copernicano... seconda impressione (Lettera... alla Granduchessa di Toscana). Florence [i.e. Naples], 1710

4to (227 x 173mm.), title printed in red and black with the engraved device of the Accademia della Crusca, woodcut initials and diagrams, wide margins with some deckle edges, contemporary vellum, blue speckled edges, occasional foxing (sometimes heavy)

Second Italian edition of the Dialogo, published by Lorenzo Ciccarelli, a lawyer in Naples, who added tracts by Kepler and Antonio Foscarini, followed by the condemnation of Galileo by the Vatican and his recantation. Ciccarelli published several works in Naples with false imprints, including Boccaccio's Decameron and translations of Descartes, most of which were on the Index of Prohibited Books. A genuine Florentine edition of Galileo's works, printed in 1718, included neither the Dialogo nor the Lettera alla Granduchessa, both of which contained heliocentric ideas.
