FIRST EDITION. Grotthuss (1785-1822) studied in Leipzig and Paris before going to Italy where he learned of Volta's electrical experiments; he experimented with electrolysis and had this pamphlet of his results published. It was his first publication and was soon translated into English for the Philosophical Magazine in 1806, influencing the research of scientists such as Humphry Davy and Michael Faraday.
