Note on Provenance
By 1988, this painting was owned by Sybil Connolly (1921–1998): a celebrated fashion designer known for her innovative use of traditional Irish textiles in haute couture. Frequently described as ‘Dublin's Dior’, Connolly achieved international repute and success, making her one of the first Irish designers to do so. Her clients included Jacqueline Kennedy (1929–1994), Elizabeth Taylor (1932–2011), the Rockefellers, and the Mellons. Connolly's home on Merrion Square – which she described as ‘the house that linen built’ – became a showcase for her taste. This work is photographed hanging there in a 1988 publication (see Literature).
