Slap Shot, a later career vehicle for Newman, followed the fortunes of a scrappy Rust Belt minor league ice hockey team as it tries to attract more local fans through violent play – giving a town on hard times something to root for, even if it means more bench-clearing brawls. In the role player-coach Reggie Dunlop, who leans into the violence on ice as a winning marketing ploy, Newman often said it was one of the most enjoyable times he had making a film. It reunited him with not only director George Roy Hill, but costar Strother Martin. While a modest hit with mixed reviews on its release, Slap Shot has since become a cult sleeper.
