Purchased by the parents of the consignor directly from the artist, probably in 1951.

Jorge "Chato" Castillo is considered to have been the most innovative and artistic of the Castillo brothers, pioneering the return to Mayan and Aztec-influenced designs and creating the "metales casados," or "married metals" technique of mixing silver, copper, and brass.
