A Bezalel Wool Pile Carpet, Jerusalem, Circa 1908-10


in tones of rust, beige and cream, depicting a view of Jerusalem framed by three linked menorahs, all within a border of linked rectangular cartouches, titled and signed in dark blue Hebrew lettering


Length 68 ¼ in.; Width 28 in. 

173.4 cm; 71 cm

The Citadel of David and the Temple Mount are labeled as such. Below, the inscription reads: “In the days to come, the Mount of the Lord’s House shall stand firm above the mountains” [Isa. 2:2], surrounded by the words “Bezalel, Jerusalem.”


Two versions of this Art Nouveau design are illustrated and described in Anton Felton, Jewish Carpets, A History and Guide, nos. 29 ad 30, pp. 96 97. Jay Weinstein illustrates a similar example in  A Collector’s Guide to Judaica, p 168 no 219, sold Sotheby’s, New York, June 2 1982, lot 341.
