Lot Details

Description

A Bezalel Long Wool Pile Carpet, Jerusalem, Circa 1910-15

narrow rectangular in tones of burgundy, ochre and greens, with a central panel arched at each end within a scalloped border of Art Nouveau menorahs, signed at both ends with the word "Bezalel" and inscribed in the center with the name Moser

Length 107 in.;  Width 35 ¼ in.

272 cm; 89.5 cm

Purchased by the consignor’s parents at Skinner, Boston, 24 October 1987.

The “Moser” name woven into the center of this piece is probably for Jacob Moser (1839-1922), a German-born entrepreneur who became a textile magnate in Bradford, England, a Zionist, and an important supporter of the Bezalel School. In addition to trips to Erez Israel in 1908 and 1910, there are accounts of him receiving in England gifts sent from the school in Jerusalem.
