Traugott Schiess (1834–1869) was a talented Swiss landscape painter from the generation that came after Alexandre Calame. He perfectly encapsulates a balance between the tradition of idyllic depictions of mountains and the more realist style of the Barbizon School. Schiess trained in Munich with Steffan. Later, he met Zünd and Koller while travelling in the Swiss Alps.

In the Alpine study Alpine Roses, Traugott Schiess focuses on a detailed and colourful representation of flowers in the foreground, contrasting with the colder landscape in the background. It is worth noting that until this time flowers were virtually absent from Alpine painting, particularly in Calame’s work. Schiess has managed their inclusion in this painting with ingenuity and grace.

Traugott Schiess (1834-1869) est un talentueux paysagiste suisse de la génération postérieure à Alexandre Calame. Il incarne parfaitement l'équilibre entre la tradition de la représentation idyllique des montagnes et le style plus réaliste de l'École de Barbizon. Schiess a été formé à Munich auprès de Steffan. Il a ensuite rencontré Zünd et Koller en voyageant dans les Alpes suisses.

Roses des Alpes est une étude alpine dans laquelle Traugott Schiess met en valeur une représentation détaillée et colorée des fleurs au premier plan, en contraste avec le paysage plus froid de l’arrière-plan. Il est significatif de remarquer que jusqu'à ce moment, les fleurs étaient presque absentes des peintures alpines, en particulier dans l'œuvre de Calame. Schiess les a intégrées dans cette œuvre de manière ingénieuse et délicate.
