This work encapsulates the wild northern landscapes with which Dahl made his name. Although he had established his international reputation by 1820, when he settled permanently in Dresden, his love for Norwegian landscapes stimulated his creativity throughout his life. While travelling in Norway, Dahl drew constantly in his sketchbooks, amassing a large number of studies that he could later paint in oils in his Dresden studio. In his notes, Dahl described this work as ‘an imaginary painting in the style of Voss’, linking the painting to the region north-east of his natal city.
