Originally introduced in the mid-1950s, the Rolex Milgauss was engineered to resist magnetic fields up to 1,000 gauss, hence its name. Designed for professionals working in environments with strong electromagnetic fields, such as scientists at CERN in Geneva, the Milgauss addressed the need for precision timekeeping in challenging technical conditions. Magnetic interference can severely impact the accuracy of a mechanical movement, or even render it inoperable, making the Milgauss a vital tool for specialists in such fields.
Over the course of its first 32 years, the Milgauss saw only one major model revision before being discontinued in 1988. It remained out of production until its much-anticipated return in 2007, when Rolex introduced the contemporary reference 116400. This modern iteration features a robust Oyster case with a smooth domed bezel and updated Rolex finishing throughout. A detail unique to this reference is the text found on the case back, specific to the Milgauss line.
One of the most distinctive and polarizing elements of the Milgauss is its lightning bolt-shaped seconds hand, a nod to the watch’s scientific roots. This striking feature is particularly eye-catching on the white dial variant, where it sweeps over bold orange hour markers in a vivid contrast that reflects the watch’s unconventional spirit.
A unique blend of technical innovation and playful design, the Milgauss holds a singular place within Rolex’s professional watch collections. The present example is offered in never-worn condition, with factory stickers intact, a pristine representation of one of Rolex’s most characterful and collectible modern models.
