JUVENALIS, Decimus Junius. Satyrae [with commentary of Dominicus Calderinus]. Calderinus: Defensio adversus Brotheum. Venice: Bartholomaeus de Zanis, 3 October, 1487, 62 leaves, a-i6 k8, 61 lines of commentary, roman type, initial spaces, a3-4 lightly foxed


2 works in one volume, Chancery folio (300 x 210mm.), contemporary Italian (Venetian?) blind-tooled calf over wooden boards, 5 small brass bosses on each cover, 4 clasps, 2 endleaves from an eleventh-century Italian manuscript of the Sermons of Leo the Great on the Resurrection (Migne, PL 54, cols 390-393) in a large handsome Caroline minuscule script, lower pastedown with scissors watermark (similar to Briquet 3668, Rome 1454), title lettered along foot of textblock, binding repaired at edges with new straps, covers somewhat rubbed

Benedetto Capilupi (1461-1518) was secretary to the Gonzaga family and in particular to Isabella d'Este. His son Lelio (1497-1563) was a poet. Benedetto wrote to Aldus Manutius on behalf of Isabella requesting books.
