A pair of sketchbooks, accomplished in various mediums, 1878-1880
Two sketchbooks (135 x 184 mm). With 110 highly detailed drawings in pen and ink, pencil and watercolor of churches, public buildings and architectural details, many titled, dated and signed with initials, occasional and faint foxing. Quarter black roan with pebbled-grained black and green cloth, each sketchbook signed by the artist on the inside front covers; rubbed, spines largely perished.

James Atwood Slater was premium holder in design, silver medalist of the Royal Academy of Arts, and awarded the Sharpe prize by the Royal Institute of British Architects.
The two sketchbooks contain a wide array of intricately detailed drawings in various media of buildings and architectural details found during Atwood Slater's travels in Europe and in and around his environs at home in London and Bristol. Other towns and regions featured in the present sketchbooks include: Somerset, Devon, Paris, Rouen, Fontainebleau, Beaune, Dijon, Reims, Geneva, Lausanne, Fribourg, Strasbourg.
