Description
Henry Timberlake
The Memoirs of Lieut. Henry Timberlake (who accompanied the Three Cherokee Indians to England in the year 1762). London: for the author, 1765
FIRST EDITION, 8vo (201 x 124 mm.), folding map ("A Draught of the Cherokee Country") and chart bound in at end, sections of text marked with brackets in pencil in the margins by an early reader, later half calf, sprinked edges, lacking half-title, some spotting
RARE. Timberlake's Memoirs record his adventures among the Overhill Cherokee and travels in Tennessee, Georgia, the Carolinas and Virginia after the French and Indian War. In 1762, Timberlake escorted the Cherokee chief Outacity and two of his warriors to London, where they created a sensation. The map, printed on thick paper, depicts a twenty-mile stretch of the Little Tennessee River, showing Fort Loudon and several Cherokee villages, each identified with the name of its chief and the number of its warriors.
