A gold cagework, Japanese lacquer and hardstone snuff box, Jean-François Delanoy, Paris, 1785

of cut-cornered rectangular form, the gold mounts engraved with garlands and enclosing panels of contemporary European lacquer in Japanese taste, the lid with a panel representing, in a vignette, a pair of gold cranes with spread wings, flanked by bamboo and fern, the sides and base with panels by a different hand, representing fruit and flowers, applied with mother of pearl, hardstone and silver-gilt butterflies and sunflowers, on an aventurine lacquer ground, the corners set with lapis lazuli panels, maker’s mark, charge and discharge marks of Henri Clavel, Paris date letter for 1785,

Delanoy was the son of a master and member of a large family of Paris goldsmiths of whom at least five worked as sertisseurs, specialists in setting and mounting. He entered his mark in 1785 sponsored by N.J. Maugier and is recorded as working in the rues St-Martin and St-Denis until 1793.
