each finely painted to the interior with a cluster of white orchids and a spray of pink and blue chrysanthemum, two butterflies fluttering by, the exterior decorated with multi-coloured lingzhi, all against a light brown ground, save for the base left white and inscribed with a six-character iron-red seal mark

傳為唐紹儀 (1862-1938) 舊藏
Tang Shaoyi (1868-1932) was an important political figure at the end of the Qing dynasty. Close to Yuan Shikai, he became in 1912 the first Prime Minister of the Republic of China.
The group of four flowers—prunus, orchid, bamboo and chrysanthemum—form the rebus mei lan zhu ju, "four gentlemen among flowers." The four gentlemen accomplishments are he symbolized by the bamboo which is associated with strength and scholarship, the chrysanthemum which represents pleasure and entertainment, the orchid for rarity and refinement and the prunus for vitality and longevity.
