Council of Trent. Index librorum prohibitorum, cum regulis confectis per Patres a Tridentina Synodo delectos, auctoritate Sanctiss. D.N. Pii IIII, Pont. Max. comprobatus. Venice: [Paolo Manuzio], 1564

First official printing of the Index of Prohibited Books, as issued by the Council of Trent, along with the rules governing the listings. While the debates during the Council had aimed to moderate the previous restrictions, the published version of the Index only showed minor alterations. The final rule specified the examination of manuscripts before printing with an imprimatur to be included in the printed work, and also the examination by officials of the stock of bookshops and any imports, in order to control all aspects of book circulation.

binding: Later limp vellum (157 x 104 mm), stubs from two pairs of ties. (Binding slightly stained.)

acquisition: Purchased from Chartaphilus, Milan, 2022. references: Edit16 47972 (variants recorded with Aldine device or papal arms on title); Renouard 196/24; UCLA 700 (with Aldine device)
