Donated by Artist, new work painted for Dreyfoos School of the Arts Charity Auction.
Javier Suarez is the son of an architect and he felt compelled to follow in his father’s footsteps, though art was his first love. At the age of ten, Javi moved with his family from Puerto Rico to Florida.
At the University of Florida, Javi’s architectural studies prepared and informed his art. It taught him to question everything and rely on his ideas to produce quality work. His passion for his craft is integral to his success. Javi received a master’s degree in Architecture from the University of California in Los Angeles in June 1997. While searching for a thesis topic, his interest in improvisation inspired him to look beyond the historical precedents within architecture. Under the teachings of the world-famous jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell, Javi focused his thesis on jazz as a model for architecture. The ideas behind this thesis have influenced the process and concepts of his art and led Javi to explore issues of identity and representation via improvisation and symbolism.
