Figures close to the present tronie, which appear in other relatively late works by Ostade include two paintings in the Staatliches Museum, Schwerin: a small single figure (inv. no. G 2389),1 and the two men in the centre of a tavern scene, dated 1660 (inv. no. G 141).2
