Ferry Carondelet is identified by the inscription on the letter he holds. He was born in Malines, Flanders, and embarked on a highly successful diplomatic and ecclesiastical career that took him all over Europe. In 1510 he was appointed Papal Legate to the court of Emperor Maximilian I, and Sebastiano's original painting dates to Carondelet's time in Rome between 1511–13.
