Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 28 October 2009, lot 34 (as follower of Cristofano Allori);
Where acquired by the present owner for £2,500.
A very similar composition is used by Marcello Venusti (c. 1512-1579) in three known paintings, the prime version of which is the panel in the sacristy of San Giovanni in Laterano, Rome,1 and which is actually believed to be based on an original design by Michelangelo (1475-1564).
