Shunkosai Hokushu (active circa 1810-1832)

Two woodblock prints from the series Comparison of Current Roles on Fans (Uchiwa tosei kurabe)

Edo period, 19th century

 

each a woodblock print, embellished with metallic pigment, from the series Comparison of Current Roles on Fans (Uchiwa tosei kurabe), each signed Shunkosai Hokushu ga (Pictured by Shunkosai Hokushu), published by Toshikuraya Shinbei, 5th month 1824; each with collector's seal of Gerhard Pulverer, and comprising:

 

- Left (Hidari): The actor Ichikawa Ebijuro I in the role of the porter Yokanpei

- Right (Migi): The actor Nakamura Utaemon III in the role of Yakanbei

 

Each vertical oban: each approx. 39.2 x 26 cm., 15⅜ x 10¼ in.
