The present lot comprises a set of full-form rubbings (quanxing tuo) capturing all facets of the 'Tianlai' iron guqin and its fitted case, the instrument currently in the Palace Museum, Beijing, which illustrated in Zheng Minzhong, ed., Gugong guqin tudian [Illustrated Compendium of Guqin in the Palace Museum], Beijing, 2010, pp. 184-185.

That example bears an informative inscription stating: 'The Tianlai iron guqin was acquired in the late Ming dynasty by Xiang Zijing, who named his pavilion after it. In the Qing dynasty, it passed to the Tang family of Hanshang, and subsequently to the Wu family of Qiantang. During the Guangxu reign, Wu Ruolang produced rubbings of it to present as gifts.
