Patterns & Prints: DVF’s Jonathan Saunders in Conversation at Sotheby’s

Launch Slideshow

Bringing his knowledge of fashion and art to Sotheby’s, Jonathan Saunders, the first Chief Creative Officer of Diane von Furstenberg, spoke with specialist Helen Hatch in our New York galleries on 24 April about his favourite works from this week’s Prints & Multiples sale and taking DVF into its next chapter. “You have to be respectful of a brand’s ideology, but you have to be confident enough to take it into the future,” the Scottish designer explained. In the galleries, dresses, jackets, handbags and more from his DVF summer 2017 collection perfectly complemented artworks on view. These juxtapositions revealed Saunders’s keen eye for colour and pattern; in one striking example, the floral print of a kimono-inspired dress featured peachy orange and cerulean blue, daring shades echoed in a Tom Wesselmann nude hanging nearby. These “uncomfortable” colour combinations drive his creativity. “When you work in fashion, there is a continual need for newness,” Saunders said.“If it’s unexpected, it means it’s not safe. And if it’s not safe, then it’s exciting.” Click ahead to view images from the evening in our DVF-dressed galleries. –Stephanie Sporn
