Artworks Come to Life with High-Resolution Scanning

By Sothebys

I n an exciting partnership that brings artworks to life in a unique way, Sotheby’s has collaborated with Swiss startup ARTMYN to apply their pioneering scanning and display technology to highlights of our spring and summer 2017 auctions. Through the development of a new generation of scanners and algorithms, ARTMYN can create unique, interactive, 5D images that provide an unprecedented visual experience by bringing to life the artwork’s texture and composition.

The interactive experience goes beyond revealing mere details of paint on canvas, bringing the viewer inside the creative processes of such artists as Marc Chagall, Auguste Renoir, David Hockney, Gerhard Richter and many others. “Artmyn is a young startup and Sotheby’s is one of the most prestigious institutions in the world, yet our visions are very much aligned on how we want redefine the way we experience art,” says Artmyn co-founder Alexandre Catsicas. “Although our society is going digital, the way we represent an artwork online hasn’t really changed in the past two decades,” adds Catsicas. “We’re here to change our perception of art.”
