Spotlight on the Middle East: Sotheby's Talks in Dubai

Join Sotheby’s in Dubai for a programme of talks and discussions lead by curators and Sotheby’s specialists, ahead of the exhibition of highlights from the upcoming sales of Modern & Contemporary South Asian Art, Arts of the Islamic World, 20^th Century Art: Middle East and a major Damien Hirst work from the collection of David Bowie, which forms part of the Bowie/Collector sale in London this November. The programme will journey through Modern & Contemporary Middle Eastern Art; first considering the lasting influence and legacy of women artists working in the Middle East throughout the twentieth century to the present day, followed by an introduction to Arts of the Islamic World from Edward Gibbs, Chairman, Middle East and India, Sotheby’s. Rounding up the schedule will be an in-depth look at works from a broad range of artists and disciplines across three sales, led by Ashkan Baghestani and Mai Eldib, including works by Ali Banasadr and Raqib Shaw, with a special focus on Zaha Hadid’s Lilas, currently on display in Beyond Limits, in the grounds of Chatsworth House in Derbyshire.

Wednesday 28 September:

1pm Saleh Barakat from Agial Gallery, Beirut in discussion with Mai Eldib on ‘Female artists across three generations, 1950s–2016’, in which they will discuss the work and influence of key figures such as Inji Efflatoun, Saloua Rouda Chocair, and Anna Boghiguian – and the growing global appetite for works by these artists.

Followed by a viewing of A Day in the Life of Inji Efflatoun.

Thursday 29 September:

1pm Edward Gibbs, Chairman, Middle East and India on Arts of the Islamic World.

1:30pm Ashkan Baghestani and Mai Eldib on 20^th Century Art – Middle East – Bowie Collector and Beyond Limits.
