RESULTS
The auction realised £4,015,125, exceeding the pre-sale estimate of £2.7-4 million. The sale was led by Francis Newton Souza’s masterwork, The Deposition, 1963, which sold for £1,565,000, almost three times the high estimate. There was also an outstanding result for another of India’s Modern Masters, Vasudeo S. Gaitonde. His work, Untitled, 1973, sold for £965,000, doubling the price it achieved when last on the market in 2013.

Sotheby’s is delighted to announce the next auction of Modern and Contemporary South Asian Art, which will take place in London on 18 October, 2016. An impressive range of stellar paintings and sculpture from Modern masters will be on offer, most notably a luminescent and meditative Vasudeo S. Gaitonde painting from 1973 that displays the distinctive horizontal graduating bands of colour. The sale also includes Indian works never before seen from private collections in Europe and America, including a large scale painting of The Deposition by Francis Newton Souza; an early and rare Gaitonde watercolour from a historic Czech collection; and an early ethereal Ganesh Pyne canvas work from a Swiss estate.
The sale also features rare to come to auction works from wider South Asia by Ali Imam Raza, one of the founders of Modernism in Pakistan along with works by Abdur Rahman Chughtai, Sadequain and George Keyt, one of the stalwarts of the Sri Lankan ’42 Group. A carefully curated selection of Contemporary art will also feature artists such as Ravinder Reddy, T.V. Santhosh, and Justin Ponmany. Following the successful March sale of Modern and Contemporary South Asian Art in New York, this auction will comprise never before seen art from storied collections with impressive provenances.
