This sale will offer some of the greatest Dutch atlases ever produced: Johannes Blaeu’s Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Amsterdam: 1640-1654), Abraham Ortelius’s Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Antwerp: 1579), as well as L'Atlas ou Meditations Cosmographiques (Amsterdam: 1613), by Hondius and Mercator. The sale also features a rare hand-coloured copy of The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain and Prospect (London: 1676) by John Speed, one of the most famous English map-makers. These landmark cartographic works are among the most well-known of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
Offered alongside these are two large and exceptionally scarce wall maps by Blaeu, the Archipelagus orientalis sive Asiaticus and Asiae descriptio novissima (Amsterdam: [1659]). Another highlight is a monumental Ming dynasty wall map of China and an 1803 printing of the famous “Blue Map”.
The sale also contains the extensive photographic work Illustrations of China and its People (London: 1873-74) by John Thomson and a stunning collection of 240 original drawings of costume designs for Rudolph Ackermann's Repository of Arts magazine.
