Catalogue Note
A RARE SURVIVAL: A UNIQUE COLLECTION OF 389 COLOURED PROOF PLATES FOR THE DELUXE EDITION OF BLANCO'S Flora de Filipinas. The majority of the plates are, unlike the published edition, before letters, without the names of the plants, and many show the printer's registration colour marks. Moreover, in some plates, the background colour varies from that of the final printed version.
As Stafleu notes, the number of plates of Flora de Filipinas varies from copy to copy, but is usually about 474 plates. There were two issues: a black and white version, plates numbered, printed entirely in Manila, and a chromolithographed issue, plates un-numbered, printed partly or entirely in Barcelona. It is thought that most of the coloured copies were destroyed upon the liberation of Manila at the end of the Second World War, making the survival of these plates all the more remarkable.
