Russian Pictures sale achieved a total of just under £10million, with a sell-through rate of over 90% by value. The undoubted stars of the sale were two magnificent canvases by the landscape painter Isaak Levitan which made £908,750 apiece. Alexei Bogoliubov’s View of Venice with Santa Maria della Salute in the Background was another highlight of the 19th century section, eventually selling for £500,750.
Outstanding results were seen across all collecting categories. A 1922 view of bathers at Abramtsevo by Petr Konchalovsky made £488,750 and there was fierce bidding for two paintings by Konstantin Yuon, his 1914 canvas The Kremlin at Night on the Eve of the Coronation of Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich soared over its pre-sale estimate to make £728,750.
Ilya Repin’s full-length portrait of his son Yuri and a magnificent summer landscape by Isaak Levitan, both dating from the early 1890s, come to auction for the very first time in our June sale of Russian Pictures. Exceptional views by Alexei Bogoliubov and Ivan Pokhitonov which have been in private collections for over a century are also on offer, alongside Petr Konchalovsky’s monumental canvas Women Bathing under the Willows and a winter landscape by Konstantin Yuon from the collection of British politician Richard Austin Butler. The sale further includes a strong array of avant-garde works on paper by Alexander Rodchenko, Liubov Popova, Nadezhda Udaltsova and Alexander Volkov. Their successors are well-represented by an additional 24 lots from the Bar-Gera Collection of Non-Conformist Art.
