Description

  • Ship off the Crimean Coast
  • signed in Latin and dated 1881 l.r.
  • oil on canvas
  • 25.5 by 46cm, 10 by 18in.

Provenance

Acquired by the grandfather of the present owner in the 1920s or 1930s

Condition

Structural Condition The canvas is unlined and is securely attached to what would certainly appear to be the original keyed wooden stretcher. This is ensuring an even and stable structural support. Paint Surface The paint surface has an even varnish layer. The painting has several areas of fine lines of craquelure, including within the sky in the upper left quadrant of the composition and within the sea above the right part of the lower edge. These appear entirely stable. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows just one tiny spot of retouching within the sky towards the upper left corner of the composition. Summary The painting would therefore appear to be in very good and stable condition.
