Sotheby's 20 May auction of American Art totaled $38.3 million, with a strong sell-through rate of 85.4% by lot. Nearly 60% of all sold lots in yesterday's sale exceeded their pre-sale high estimates including Two Cooks and a Haggis by Maxfield Parrish, which achieved $1,570,000 (including buyer's premium) against a pre-sale estimate of $300,000-500,000.
A diverse selection of works from the most important names in 19th and 20th century American art are presented in our 20 May sale. The auction is highlighted by Georgia O'Keeffe's White Calla Lily from 1927, a striking example of the artist's iconic flower paintings. Also featured are Spring in Vermont, a significant landscape by Milton Avery from 1945 and John Frederick Peto's Old Time Letter Rack, which epitomizes the artist's engagement with trompe l'oeil motifs.
