Catalogue Note

The present work likely relates to John Singer Sargent's Album of Figure Studies, a collection of thirty one images of the male figure that he probably executed in the 1890s or early 1900s. While it is possible Sargent created these images as studies for his mural commissions such as the rotunda decorations in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, it is more likely that Sargent used them as an opportunity to challenge himself with the intricacies of depicting the nude form.
