Johanna Flaum, Head of Contemporary Art Day Sales at Sotheby’s commented: “Today’s sale was a strong end to Sotheby’s $551 million week of Contemporary Art auctions. Our total of $91,197,063 was well over the low estimate of $73.5 million with a sell-through rate of 78%. The top lots were characterized by works by blue-chip artists many of which were drawn from distinguished private collections – Andy Warhol’s portrait of Debbie Harry lead The Peter B. Lewis Collection when it sold for $3 million and Claude Lalanne’s La Lapin de Victoire from The Schlumberger Collection stunned the room when, after a prolonged bidding contest, it fetched $2 million, many multiples of the $200/300,000 estimate. Records included Larry Poons whose Little Sangre De Christo from 1964 sold for $1.2 million and we were also pleased to see strong prices for artists such as David Hockney, Robert Motherwell, and Andreas Gursky.”
