Condition

Please note that this work is executed on two assembled canvasses. The colours are fairly accurate in the printed catalogue illustration although the overall tonality is slightly warmer in the original work. The work is executed on its original canvasses and is not relined. The junction of the two canvasses has been painted by the artist and presents stable cracks. The center of the left canvas presents tiny stabilised cracks, visible upon close inspection only. Under Ultra Violet Light no areas fluoresce. This work is in good condition.

Zao Wou-ki tames the void. It is precisely what makes him stand out from the Western pictorial tradition, what sets him apart. Similarly to painters from the Song era, in the same manner as Chinese cities, he domesticates it, he is relentlessly seeking a new balance, yet volatile and uncertain, between fullness and void. Then, colour relinquishes volume and leaves the surface in order to dive deeper and slightly unveil the mystery of an empty world haunted by fullness. Dominique de Villepin
