As the art world converges around the FIAC in Paris, the third edition of the Modernités sale at Sotheby’s Paris is set to be a high point of the season. A reflection of modern and contemporary creation this curated evening sale presents over 50 significant 20th century art works featuring surrealist masters alongside representatives of key period movements such as Lyrical Abstraction, Art Informel and Spatialisme. Most notably one finds two visionary works by Francis Picabia: a powerful Medea executed in 1929 acting as a counterpoint to a remarkably contemporary Adam and Eve from 1911. The sale also features spectacular works by Marc Chagall, Lucio Fontana, Jean Dubuffet and Hans Hartung as well as rare pieces by Fernand Léger and René Magritte (an early example of the iconic “femmes-statues”). As an homage to experimental sculpture Modernités also includes remarkable bronzes by Julio Gonzales, Jean Arp, and Germaine Richier adding to the captivating artistic dialogues presented by this innovative sale.
