Condition
Sculptural. Evidence of old worm. This working chair shows signs of age and use throughout. Te single plank seat with 'blind sockets'

The possibility of this chair originating from County Wicklow in Ireland is based upon a group by wheelwright Thomas Murphy (1839-1937) of Stratford on Slaney. The form of the present chair is a common one but does relate to work by him, which is abstract and sculptural. These chairs are illustrated Claudia Kinmonth, Irish Country Furniture 1700-1950, Yale, p.28.
The term 'Hedge Chair' comes from 'Hedge carpenter'. These men undertook a much shorter apprenticeship than a usual carpenter-joiner. The timber they employed in their work was often gleaned from hedgerows or from fallen trees and utilised for all sorts of agricultural purposes or in the creation of rustic furniture such as the present lot (for a fuller discussion see Kinmouth, op. cit., p. 34-39).
