Sampson Mordan (1790-1843) was the co-inventor of the first mechanical pencil. During his youth he was apprenticed to the inventor and locksmith Joseph Bramah. The company under its existence as S. MORDAN & CO began in 1836 and ran until 1898 before it was converted to a limited liability company.
